Hawaii, Australia, Indonesia and South Africa: all are considered some of the best surfing locations in the world. But did you know that Papua New Guinea is rapidly gaining a reputation for offering some of the most exciting, isolated and beautiful surfing spots globally?
In amongst its myriad of beautiful outer islands, atolls and coral reels—between the months of November and April—areas such as Vanimo draw surfers to the island with regular swells of between 1 and 2 metres. Unlike other surfing meccas that are often crowded, the surf management plan put in place by the Surfing Association of Papua New Guinea guarantees a limited number of 20 surfers per region, over eight breaks. Meaning that surfers are unlikely to be out on the water with more than four other people, ensuring that PNG offers an exotic, tropical, private stage for surfers to enjoy some truly incredible waves.
